Vicky Cristina Barcelona Movie Review

Posted on | October 18, 2009 |

First, an embarrassing confession: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Woody Allen movie. No, not even Annie Hall or Manhattan. But after getting my first taste with Vicky Cristina Barcelona, one can rest assured that my Netflix queue was updated accordingly. VCB was an enjoyable movie on many levels and I can’t wait to see what else I’ve been missing out on.

The movie follows two female American tourists during their two-month stay in Barcelona. Both women, played by Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansen, eventually become involved with a Catalan painter named Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) to varying degrees.

Juan Antonio’s insane ex-wife (played by an all-too-convincing and lovely Penelope Cruz) shows up to further complicate the predicament the Americans find themselves in.

The cinematography is unique, the art direction is stunning and the acting, especially by Cruz, is entrancing. It’s easy to lose yourself in the story or to find yourself just as conflicted for the characters as they are for themselves. The movie raises interesting perspectives and questions about love and commitment. Probably the worst thing about it is that it almost convinces you to make plans for spending a summer in Barcelona… which may not be such a bad idea after all.
