Pop Candy is the offspring of the weekly online column, Pop Candy, and daily blog, Hip Clicks, which ccreated when she joined USA Today in 1999. As her web audience grew, Matheson merged Hip Clicks and Pop Candy in 2005 to form the Pop Candy blog which we all know and love today.

Pop Candy, as the tag line indicates, is unwrapping pop culture’s hip and hidden treasures. The thing is Pop Candy can never be fully represented in a tag line, this just scratches the surface of this blog’s power and range. Pop Candy’s clout is built with well thought out ingredients to create a pop blog masterpiece. TheDailyContributor idolizes Pop Candy and here is why.
10. Pop Candy Podcasts
The podcast focuses on music and interviews and the podcasts are intermingled with blog posts. For the music podcasts she plays some of her current favorite songs while providing some details on the artists. These podcasts make for fine companions during long work days.

9. Whitney Loves Mustaches
Whitney has many favorite topics she likes to cover and one of the best is mustaches. Whitney will make a post focusing on mustaches every once and a while which is always entertaining! Its not often you see anyone, especially a female blogger, posting about mustaches. Of course Whitney involves the readers by highlighting reader mustaches.

8. Let’s Talk Lost / Lost in a Flash
Whitney starts up the conversation right after each Lost episode with the “Let’s talk Lost” posts. These posts generate an enormous amount of comments. The season 5 finale produced 568 comments! Whitney, because she rocks, goes through all the comments and posts the top 10 comments within a post called “Lost in a Flash”. Along with the top 10 she always includes at least one extra funny comment. Whitney always posts the whole comment and highlights the most important part of the comment in bold. This is the place to find out the little things you missed and usually blow your mind just a little. What would take much time to find in Lost forums is neatly packed into one amazing post!

5. The week in Pop: My favorite things
“This week in Pop: My favorite things” is a standing Friday feature that highlights the best of what Whitney watched, read and listened to during the week, and asks readers to do the same in the comments. Whitney rocks, which we have established in #6, so of course her favorite things are going to rock. You will find awesome books, movies and TV shows to check out! Plus the reader comments which provide even more suggestions.
4. Pop Candy Meetups
Whitney wants to meet her readers! Whitney holds Pop Candy Meetups in which blog readers meetup up with Whitney. Normally the meetups are in a happy hour form taking place at a bar or lounge. A yearly meetup takes place in San Diego during Comic-Con. For every Comic-Con meetup there is a cool poster!

3. Pop Candy Logo Owns Our Face
The Pop Candy logo is epic! Whitney incorporated a plethora of pop culture references and items which make up who she is and what the blog represents. From The Big Lebowski poster on the wall to the Lost logo on the TV there are just bits of pop culture sprinkled everywhere. Whitney has also indicated this logo will change from time to time!

2. Whitney Covers Every Cool Event!
Whitney covers all the cool events. From Comic-Con to South by Southwest she is there blogging! At Comic-Con 2009 she recorded a video blog to recap each day. Whitney also sees advanced screenings of TV shows and movies. This is the dream!

Pop Candy understands the importance of their readers and involving them in the blog. Whitney accomplishes recognition with a daily Pop Candy reader post, the Candy Mailbox and the Pop Candy Hotline. Each day the Pop Forum highlights a Pop Candy reader and their favorite things - a spotlight which spurs thousands of comments and discussion by Pop Candy community members. This daily post is the perfect acknowledgment of the readers.
“The Candy mailbag” and the “Pop Candy hotline” specifically aim to foster more of that interaction. “The Candy mailbag” answers readers questions about anything from the production status of the rumored Arrested Development movie to inquiries into the existence of Chuck Taylor inspired coffee table books. The “Pop Candy hotline” accepts reader questions, in addition to providing a forum for readers to call and chat with the author behind the blog. This reader recognition is a huge part of Pop Candy’s success and yet another reason we idolize this epic pop culture blog.

Hooray for Pop Candy! I’ve been a regular reader for a long time, and I’ve met dozens of really cool people from the blog. Whitney is terrific at what she does!

I’m a regular reader and I love Whitney and Pop Candy.
Not only does she keep me updated on things that interest me, but she also gives me tidbits I can pass on to my spawn. This helps me maintain my cool mom status.

…Pop Candy is great and keeps (old) people in the know and helps them maintain their level of awesomeness … really , Whitney is one of the kindest and sweetest people you could ever find in this sometime rotten world. There is no bad in her , thus the saying … ” It’s All Good” was invented.
