Sole Luna Cafe is at the base of the El Cortez building (Ash in between 7th and 8th) in downtown San Diego. I live just around the corner and I’ve eaten at Sole Luna Cafe 4 times now; 3 times for breakfast and once for dinner. During my 3 trips for breakfast I ordered the same thing all three times: Bagel with smoked salmon, red onion, capers and cream cheese. It comes with fresh fruit too. There is a good reason why I ordered the same thing for breakfast all 3 times - it’s really good and it fills you up. It’s pretty quite that early on a Saturday morning but it’s really relaxing. It’s right on the corner so you really get the city feel while you’re eating.
When I went to Sole Luna Cafe for dinner I ordered the lasagna. Hands down some of the best lasagna I’ve ever had. I dream about this lasagna it’s so good. What’s nice about Sole Luna Cafe is the ambiance. There is a really nice outdoor seating area that’s very chill and relaxing. The guy who waited on us was extremely Italian and pretty funny. He advised me he wouldn’t have to put my plate in the dishwasher because I practically licked it clean. There were other people eating dinner and a few people were there for drinks and happy hour.
The inside of Sole Luna Cafe definitely has an Italian bistro feel as you can order pastries and coffee. The prices are a tad too high for being so far outside of Gaslamp but this is the only knock on Sole Luna Cafe. It’s certainly a great addition to the Cortez Hill neighborhood and I hope more restaurants follow. All in all, Sole Luna Cafe has really great food and it’s definitely a great dining experience. When you go be sure to sit outside and consider yourself lucky if you get the very-Italian waiter.
