How To Tell If You’re “That Guy” In Your Office

Posted on | February 5, 2010 |

It’s a sad, scary thing, not knowing the stigma that shadows you and the eyes that roll behind you. The saddest part of all is that you are out there reading this article right now, laughing and thinking, I’m not That Guy! And you are wrong.

C’mon Guy! You have to know who you are. You start your day by greeting the receptionist with a nickname you’ve coined, maybe it’s an intentionally mispronounced version of their name or something else weird and inexplicable and vaguely sexual like Fast Fingers or Sit and Spin, in reference to their typing skills or stationary position at the reception desk.

You feel compelled to hit “Reply All” with some witty thought every time there’s a company e-mail sent out. You corner people at the coffee machine and relentlessly talk to them about your medical issues or your wife or the good old days. You are That Guy, the one who everyone dreads, the one who everyone pretends to find funny. Still not sure if this is you? Here’s how to tell.

You have initiated every conversation that you’ve ever had at work. Think back to the last five or six conversations you’ve had with your coworkers. How did they begin? Were they edging away from you because, chances are, you’re a Close Talker? Did they have a distant, deer-in-headlights kind of smile plastered on their face? More importantly, when was the last time someone actually came TO YOU to chat? If you can’t remember or the answer is “never,” chances are: you’re That Guy.

Take a look at your desk. What “hilarious” trinkets and pictures are tacked up around your cubicle? Do you have “I Can Haz Cheezburger?” photos taped above your monitor? Cutouts of scenes from Family Guy with dirty quotes? Industry inside jokes that you hope others will see and comment on when they pass, such as Photoshopped images of Steve Jobs or Bernie Madoff? A “hot girl” desk calendar? Do you have toys like Slinkies and Magic 8-Balls lying around? And in comparison to everyone else, is your desk perhaps the most decorated and potentially offensive? I thought so. You set these up to show everyone how crazy and funny you are. They are set as traps to capture innocent victims in the hopes of sparking a conversation. Desk decorations are a key indicator of being That Guy.
