Comic-Con 2009 Dexter Panel

Before I even entered Ballroom 20 Dexter was in my subconscious due their massive advertisement campaign. Dexter ads were not only all over the Convention Center, they were all over San Diego. This ad campaign features Dexter’s baby. The baby always appears with a bib featuring a clever tag-line for the highly anticipated season 4. The centerpiece is ‘My Dad is Killer’. I saw this ad on pedal cabs, bus stops and even plastered all over a bus! Dexter came to Comic-Con full force making a splash all over San Diego.

I almost missed this panel because I underestimated the line. Luckily I slipped in towards the end of the pack. I guarantee many hopeful attendees were left standing in line. I wish I was in the same shoes as the moderator Ralph Garman who before this panel, as he put it, mainlined all three season of Dexter. This panel featured the main characters Dexter played by Michael C. Hall, Rita played by Julie Benz and Deb played by Jennifer Carpenter. I immediately noticed the married couples, Michael and Jennifer, were not sitting next to each other. Julie was right in between them. I found this interesting. Moving on, the panel also featured executive producers John Goldwyn, Sara Collecton , Clyde Phillips and Melissa Rosenberg. Along with playing the title character, Michael C. Hall is also an executive producer on the show. Rounding up this fine panel was the surprise guest John Lithgow. Right away we were shown the the season 4 trailer and of course it ruled.

During the trailer everyone cheered when Special Agent Frank Lundy, played by Keith Carradine, appeared on the screen. I suppose Lundy is a very well liked character, much more than I thought. The trailer provided a thrilling look into season 4 as Dexter, now the family man, is trying to find “time to kill”. John Lithgow is revealed as the villain in season 4. He will be known as the Trinity Killer. From the clips in the trailer he looks extremely creepy and appears to be an excellent adversary for Dexter.

Michael C. Hall continuously impressed me with his very intelligent answers to the same question. From “How do you play a character who is sarcastic and funny one minute and then a serial killer the next?” to “How do you play a character who plays a family man and a killer?”. A form of this question was asked at least four times and each time Michael constructed a unique intelligent answer. I was waiting for Michael to scream at the top of his lungs “I’ve already answered that!” but he just calmly responded to every variation of the question. John Lithgow talked about how he got involved in the show which was very interesting. John signed on before watching the full series. After watching all the seasons John began to realize how lucky he was to be in the show. Julie Benz was asked if she thought Rita knew anything about Dexter’s “hobby”. Julie stated even if Rita caught onto any signs of these activities love would totally block it out. Julie even went on to say even if Dexter was caught she would just simply not believe it because she is in love with Dexter. Jennifer Carpenter made some comments on Lundy coming back and how this will make for some interesting situations in the first few episodes.

The producers fielded some interesting questions. A question was asked about the controversial ad campaign in which you were able to send an e-mail link to a video news report that makes it look like the recipient of the email has been targeted by a serial killer. The producers claimed to have know nothing about this campaign. I would not be surprised if one of the producers on the stage pulled the trigger on this viral video campaign but nobody wanted to own up. The producers were also asked if they planned on following the books. The producers stated the show would not be following the books and if anyone was wondering Author Jeff Lindsay is pleased with what the show is doing. Prepare to follow the most killer dad on Sunday September 27th.
