3 Common Social Media Network Threats to Avoid

Posted on 27 May 2010 by nick

Online social media network sites have experienced an extraordinary growth in popularity over the last few years. The growth in social media use has captured the attention of not only enthusiastic users but also cyber criminals as well. It was inevitable that internet predators would gravitate towards social sites due to the sheer number of users these sites attract. This criminal element commonly targets innocent site participants with various types’ of scams looking for money, personal ID information or to even install spyware or malware.

Here are 3 of the most common scams people using social media sites need to be aware of to better protect themselves against these internet predators.

Shortening (Hiding) Links

Shortening links is an acceptable, expected and encouraged practice on most social sites to ‘dress up’ rather long links being sent in short messages. This is well and good however shortened links also actually ‘hide’ the ultimate destination to where you are being redirected. By inadvertently landing on a ‘forbidden’ site you could easily have unwanted malware installed on your computer. Treat these links like you would suspicious email and only open those that come from a source with which you are already familiar.

‘Fun’ Questionnaires

How many times have you come across short quizzes sent to you that will tell you things about yourself, friends, or even love life? All you need to do is to ‘register’ by leaving your contact information including your cell phone number in order to receive your answers and even a prize. Well many times the ‘prize’ is really a ’surprise’ when you have a billing for a subscription you had unknowingly signed up for on your phone. The best approach with these questionnaires is to simply ignore them!

Personal ID Theft

Information ‘trawling’ or phishing has been around for a while online. Most of us are use to seeing it come through in suspicious emails that require sensitive information in order to complete a transaction. Well those damn cyber criminals have now taken their methods and adapted them to online social media sites. Ever seen a message that says ’someone is looking for you’ and then instructs you to click on a link to see who it may be? When the link takes you to one of the login pages of a popular social network you are then required to sign in, DO NOT! By doing so you may be giving a stranger complete access to your account and no telling what they will do with that!

Online social media network sites have grown in popularity and as a result have also become the targets for cyber criminals as well. With the tremendous increase in social media use the online criminal element has spotted an opportunity to target large masses fairly easily. They tend to favor the use of scams which work quite efficiently for them when dealing with large masses of people. 3 of the most commonly used scams to which people using social media sites are exposed are mentioned above. The danger such schemes like these pose to the innocent is magnified when people are unaware of their existence until it is too late. In this case however to be fore-warned is to be fore-armed! It is therefore hoped that this ‘heads-up’ will help neutralize any efforts and all intentions of this rather creepy online element.

Tattoo Safety - How to Get a Tattoo Safely

Posted on 27 May 2010 by nick

The process of tattooing involves needles that move at very fast speeds to penetrate the outer layers of the skin. The needles break the skin, and inject dots of ink into the third layer, creating the image of the tattoo design in the skin. Whenever you are getting a tattoo, common sense and a bit of tattoo safety are always the most important considerations.

When getting a tattoo, most people fear getting the virus known as HIV, which can lead to the dreaded AIDS virus. Although many fear HIV, it is just one of the many viruses that can result from tattoos. Staph, syphilis, tuberculosis, and hepatitis are all but a few of the other diseases that can result from tattoos. All it takes is a dirty or unsanitary needle and you could wind up contracting one of the deadly viruses listed above.

Just like other activities, tattooing can be very dangerous. Although tattooing is indeed dangerous, there are ways that you can minimize or eliminate the potential dangers. Each and everyday, tattoo artists have to adhere to a strict code of tattoo safety to ensure that the risk of contracting HIV or any other diseases is little to none.

Professional tattoo artists will sterilize their equipment after each use. They use steam pressure autoclave when disinfecting their tattoo guns and needles. Bleach and alcohol don’t sterilize the equipment; they are instead used to prep the equipment. Once the bleach and alcohol have been used on the instruments, they will then be autoclaved, which will sterilize them.

When the tattoo artist does the tattoo, he should always wear rubber gloves that can easily be disposed of. The ointment spreaders and any type of rags that are used should also be disposable. When you walk into the tattoo studio, the floors should be spotless. In the rooms where the tattoos are done, the working area should always be clean and sanitary.

Before the tattooist starts the tattoo, he should always give each customer a brand new set of fresh needles. Then, he should always dip the needle in a small cap of pigment that he just took out of a large squeezable bottle. If the artist dips the needle into the big bottle, you may very well be sharing fluids with those who have had tattoos from that same big bottle.

Whenever you decide to get a tattoo you should always put safety first. Tattoo safety is very important, as you could otherwise get a disease or a serious infection. Before you decide on a tattoo studio, you should always make sure that they are clean and sanitary. If you get a tattoo from a studio that is dirty or unsanitary, you could wind up on a never ending spiral of infections and viruses.

7 Reasons People Fail When Marketing on the Internet

Posted on 23 May 2010 by nick

It seems more times than not people fall short of their goals or aspirations when marketing on the internet. Now there is not any singular reason keeping folks from achieving success in business online. Often it can be found that information overload is a large obstacle that many fail to overcome but there are other factors to blame as well. It does seem, for the most part however, that these business failures have more to do with the individuals involved than they do with the internet marketing system itself.

Here is a look at 7 of the most common reasons many fail to become successful when marketing online.

Jumping from Opportunity to Opportunity

Being that there is so much information floating about online it is hard to ignore some of the ‘opportunities’ that present themselves to people. Working online is no different from any other worthwhile pursuit insofar as they all require a certain amount of your focus for results to be had. With the ongoing temptation of new opportunities many will tend to jump from one to the other without devoting enough attention to any of them to become successful.

Not Sure Where to Start

There are so many things involved it can be mind boggling as to what to do first and than what to do next. For many this is the first time they are starting a business and are therefore unaware of all the little matters that need attention. It is typical as a result for a lot of people to become frustrated and give up before they even really get started.

Information Overload

Ultimately information overload can be seen as the primary culprit that leads to the deterioration of people’s motivation and subsequently their efforts. Having good information is an asset but not knowing what is good or what to ignore can quickly turn into a problem. It is common that too much information can figuratively paralyze a person from taking the necessary actions needed.

Generating Traffic

Traffic generation is at the core of any online business as to whether it will succeed or not. The emphasis on traffic can not be overstated however many underestimate how much time this function may take. Eventually either their frustrations with their lack of results or their unwillingness to invest the time will lead to them quitting.

Losing Focus

If business results do not come quickly for people or perhaps if the process is more involved than anticipated many will lose their interest and thereby their focus.

Lack of Time Management Skills

Knowing how to mange your time is a key component of running an online business. An online entrepreneur is generally responsible for all the various functions involved in the business. When you are not familiar with how to prioritize and utilize your time things can quickly become very overwhelming.

Motivation

If the proper motivation is not in place to begin with the previous list of ‘excuses’ is developed to ‘explain away’ any lack of success! Many people get involved online thinking that little time or effort is needed in order to become successful. With the assumption that working online leads to overnight riches many people therefore are setting themselves up for failure. These false expectations do not properly prepare people for what it will take to gain any type of success in business online.

Marketing on the internet offers many opportunities for people to earn a solid income but it also offers many business failures as well. Although there is not any one reason for keeping many from achieving success in business online, information overload certainly presents a strong case for itself. The 7 reasons many fail to become successful online that were cited above are more an issue with the individuals involved than the internet marketing system. The good news is the system does work and it is not too complicated for anybody to master. The reality is that it does take focus and an investment of your effort to enjoy the ‘fruits’ of online marketing. Always remember there is no such thing as a free lunch!

Google Adsense - Is It Really Possible to Make Money From It?

Posted on 21 May 2010 by nick

Truly, for quite some time now, Google Adsense has generally dominated forums, discussions boards and even newsletters all over the Internet. Already, there are stories of big money to be made and millions made by those who are just working from home with their computer. In fact, it looks like they have already dominated the internet marketing business and is now being considered by many as the easiest way to making money online.

Actually, the key to succeeding with it is the placing of ads on pages that are receiving high volume traffic for high demand keywords. In short, the higher the cost per click to the advertiser, the more you will receive per click from your site. Obviously, it does not pay to target low cost per click keywords and place them on pages that do not receive hits or visitors. With everybody getting online and clicking away everyday, it is no wonder why they have become an instant gold mine.

For those that are just new to this market, it would be a blow to their pride knowing that their homepage is buried somewhere in the little ads promoting other peoples services. But then, when they get the idea that they are actually earning more money that way, all doubts and skepticism is laid to rest. There are two major tips and techniques that some successful webmasters and publishers are learning to blend together in order to make money easier using Adsense.

1) It is about targeting high traffic pages on your site. If you check on your logs, you will discover that many of your visitors are taking advantage of the free affiliate marketing resources and ebooks that you are offering on your site. In simple words, your ads are working effectively and are generating more clicks. Generally, it means more money for you.

2) Having Adsense links place on pages that are producing little, or even, no profit. By placing these links on a free resources page, you will reduce the amount of potential customers being lost to other sites. This is tricky, but effective nonetheless.

However, when learned to work effectively, these two factors are indeed a good source of producing a minimal amount of revenue from a high traffic page. Though, many people are using this strategy to pick up some extra cash with Adsense. This also can be rewarding to informational sites that focus their efforts on delivering powerful affiliate link free content to their visitors. Now they can gain a monetary return on their services.

In fact, with the many techniques that people are now learning on how to make the easiest money with Adsense, it is not surprising that Google is trying everything to update and polish this system in order to maintain their good image. Moreover, the possibility of adding 2nd tier program to it is not impossible. With all the people spending more time in their Adsense now and still more getting into this line of marketing everyday, there is no doubt about the many new improvements yet to be made.

Imagine the smiles on the faces of the webmasters and publishers all around the world if when they sign up for sub-affiliates who helps to double or even triple the amount that they are already earning. The one handy money making feature that is available with Adsense now is the ability to filter out up to 200 urls. These gives webmasters the option to block out low value offers from their pages as well as competitors to their websites.

This is about taking only those that are profitable and dumping the ones that seem useless. We all know that with Google Adsense, the possibilities are endless and yet there is also the possibility of someone taking advantage of the easy money process that this internet marketing is doing. If you come to think about it, these negative factors may force Google to break down and thrash it in the process. If that happens, people would have to go back to the old ways of internet marketing that does not make money online as easy.

But for now, it is very much around. As long as there are people wanting to earn some easy money online by just using their expertise, then there is a bright future ahead. However, with all the strict rules and guidelines that Google is enforcing over Adsense, it will definitely take a long time for these privileges to be spammed and even abolished.

How to Chose the Correct New York Catering Group

Posted on 21 May 2010 by nick

If you are in charge of planning an event in the metropolitan area of the Big Apple, you are probably interested in finding a New York New York Catering (http://www.personaltouchcaterers.com) firm that will assist you in making certain the event is a success. There are many types of functions in planning stages every day. A professional firm is experienced at keeping track of all the details of an event. Here are a few tips about how to find a firm you will be satisfied with when the event is over.

You have responsibilities to those individuals or firms you contact about providing New York Catering (http://www.personaltouchcaterers.com/NewYorkCatering) services. It is up to you to define the type of event you want and the number of people you expect. Caterers need to know whether you want a buffet or servers and whether the event will be in a building or in a park. You won’t know all of the details, but you should define at least the general parameters for the event.

Look for a catering firm that specializes in the type of function you are planning. Planning a party for fifty five-year-old youngsters is very different than planning a business luncheon for their parents. Catering firms tend to specialize in the things they do best. That is not to say that a caterer would be unable to plan both types of functions.

Don’t make assumptions about the services you will be providing versus the tasks to be done by the catering firm. For example, if you plan to do the table centerpieces personally, a caterer needs to know before submitting an estimate to you. If you need a caterer to provide extra servers during certain hours of a lengthy function, that information must be disclosed before the last minute.

You should ask the caterer for a line item proposal, especially if you are asking for additional services. You don’t want to pay for unauthorized items, and the caterer can point to the proposal if items are not specified. The proposal should define such items as providing servers, decorations, or clean up if you want those to be included within the price of the caterer’s proposal.

Expect to do some careful reference checking for the catering firms you are considering. Don’t stop with reading the ads or brochures about the qualifications of the firm. Insist on talking personally to satisfied customers. You can also look online for business review sites.

Food presentation is an important part of any catered event. You need to be sure that the caterer you select is able to prepare the type of food that you choose. Fancy sit-down dinners require a different type of food preparation than large scale buffet meals. The ability to prepare ethnic cuisines is not necessarily transferable from one cook to the next.

How To Attract Beautiful Women: Understanding Women’s Body Language

Posted on 19 May 2010 by nick

Developing an understanding of body language is an essential part of learning how to attract beautiful women. A woman, according to research, sends out approximately five times more messages via body language than a man does during the same period of time. Missing out on the information those signals are trying to send is disastrous to your game, particularly because, since body language is controlled unconsciously, it is the most accurate indicator of a woman’s feelings.

One of the top signs a woman is flirting with you is known as “preening.” A woman is preening when she strokes her hair, runs her fingers through it, tosses it over her shoulders…you get the idea. Another classic preening move is calling attention to her mouth. A woman will lick her lips, bite them, or touch them in order to get your attention. The more she draws attention to her lips, the more you will want to kiss them.

Some body language messages are easier to read: if she maintains eye contact, especially if she does so for a longer-than-socially-acceptable timeframe, she’s into you. Another strong indicator of interest is her touch. If you touch her and she touches you back, she’s giving you permission to touch her more. She might even start initiating physical contact.

Notice the position of her body. If her feet are pointing towards you, she likes you. If her arms are crossed, she doesn’t.

The eyes are an incredibly important source of information that you must be taught to read if you’re going to learn how to attract beautiful women effectively. In addition to eye contact, keep a careful watch over her pupils. Human pupils dilate (expand) when they like something, and contract when they do not. Just make sure you’re not confusing signals of interest with a natural phenomenon – if it’s dark, her pupils will naturally dilate and if it’s bright out, her pupils will naturally contract.

Don’t think that, just because women are more adept at reading body language, it’s a method of communication that only they can use – you can learn how to attract beautiful women with your body language, too!

How To Collect Sports Memorabilia

Posted on 18 May 2010 by nick

Collecting sports memorabilia is a popular hobby amongst sports enthusiasts all over the world. It is also a massive commercial industry and is growing every year. A passion for sport can turn into a large collection of signed pieces, and in some cases this collection can have great financial value. For others, the value is merely sentimental. Whatever, the reason for collecting sports memorabilia, there is no doubt that it is a very popular hobby.

Sports memorabilia covers a lot of different pieces, and the prices can range from pence to thousands of pounds. Photos, cards, shirts and other sports related equipment that have been signed by an athlete are considered memorabilia, but only when the signature has been certified by a reputable company. Adding an autograph to an article can either decrease of increase its value. For example, if the autograph has been personalized to a specific name then the autograph will devalue the item on the public market. The price of an item will also be very low if the item is sold without a certificate of authenticity. Replica and authentic sports products that are unsigned, or are signed but not authenticated, are considered collectibles.

If you decide to become a collector of sports memorabilia, you must first establish a strategy. Firstly, you will need to decide whether you are going to become a collector as a hobby or if you want to collect in order to make a profit. If you decide on the latter, you need to consider to likelihood that you will become attached to the items, and in the event that this happens how likely it is that you will be able to part with your things. If you think that you may get too attached to your collection then it may be wise to collect merely for pleasure rather than as a money-making scheme. If you think that you will be able to give up your treasures in order to make a profit you need to give yourself limits on how much you are willing to spend.

Next you should decide on a theme for your collection. It may be that you are interested in one type of sport or a certain period of sporting history. However, you should try to narrow your search to include maybe only one team, one athlete, the Olympics, or one sport. This will enable you to become more educated about one area and with time you will be able to spot interesting and rare pieces that will be popular with buyers.

Now that you have established the theme of your collection you will also be able to determine its value. For example, if your collection focuses solely on one player then it may be difficult to sell, but a collection that is dedicated to a certain piece of sporting history may appeal to a wider range of buyers.

In order to keep track of the growth of your collection, it might be helpful to make a wish list of items that you want the most. If you stick to the list this will ensure that you do not panic buy items that may turn out to be bad buys. A wish list will also help you to establish a budget and stick to it.

In order to make your collection as good as possible, it is helpful to educate yourself about the sports memorabilia market. You should make yourself aware of market prices, factors that make prices fluctuate and decrease and the general history behind your collection. This means that you are less likely to be ripped off when buying pieces and you will be able to choose pieces wisely. You should also keep up to date with the sports memorabilia market in general to see what is selling well and what isn’t.

Being a collector of sports memorabilia takes a lot of time and effort. You should expect to have to take the time to shop online, scour newspaper adverts for auctions and deal directly with a specialized sports memorabilia broker and even attend collectible shows. Another way is to go to the direct source, for example attending games or training sessions to get the players to sign memorabilia. If you have a genuine interest in your collection then these things will not seem like hard work to you, but if they do then maybe you should reconsider becoming a collector.

If you want 100% genuine sports memorabilia then look no further than www.genuinememoriabilia.co.uk. They are a family run company that has an extensive catalog of over 6,000 items of memorabilia. For more information on sports memorabilia click here.

How To Achieve Higher PageRank With SEO

Posted on 18 May 2010 by nick

One of the most innovate technologies that Google had developed is the PageRank. This is a special algorithm that changes every day and according to it the all of the pages that are indexed by Google are displayed. The algorithm is a secret so nobody except the person who has created it knows what it does exactly. There are some ways using search engine optimization to make your PageRank higher, which will lead to displaying your website on higher positions in the Google index. One of the most important things you must do is to include all of the words that the users of Google had used to reach your website. Make sure that you include all of them in the text content of your website, but have in mind that you must not overuse them. If you do so the Google will think of your website as irrelevant and you will not get the results you wanted. The words that users have sued are accessible in the traffic reports of your website, there you can also see from where most of the people are accessing your website and try to improve the relationships with that website.

How to achieve higher PageRank with SEO? Part 2

Another thing that will improve your rank in Google is when you write new articles to post in your website, make sure that they will be published each one of them on a separate page. This will allow both visitors and search engine spiders to easily access your website and also it will allow you to make an archive of all of the articles you have published. Make sure also that each article will be published with its description and keywords in the Meta tags of the particular webpage, because this will help the visitors to find all of the content of your website easier. The main advantage of this feature that you may include in your website is the fact that all of the visitors will find your content well organized, unique and useful and they will be returning to your website in the future, so it will allow you to maintain stable traffic statistics. Also on the other hand the spiders of the search engines will return to your website, where they will find fresh and unique contentto index and this will guarantee you higher ranking positions in Google.

How to achieve higher PageRank with SEO? Part 3

Improving your PageRank is crucial when you want to get your website positioned on the top places by Google. I have mentioned some tips for improving your Google statistics and I will introduce you to the last peace of advice. The last thing you must do is to make a page on your website where you provide links to your website that are accessible for others to use. Having this done will help you to maximize the number of the back links that you have to your website. A good idea is to provide some useful banners as long as text links that are free for use. Also you may ask websites that you are linked to put some links to your website. One of the main advantages of this system is that you make your website popular among all of the websites that have similar content and this is an opportunity to advertise your website for free, also many of the visitors will have the impression that your website is quite important, because of the affiliate links that you provide. Only you must be aware that you avoid linking with pages that have lower PageRank than your own, because this may actually reduce the popularity of your website in stead of improving it.

How To Speed Up Your Slow Computer

Posted on 16 May 2010 by nick

Personal computers are an amazing invention. Computers make our jobs easier and provide interesting things for us to do at home or on the road. But over time, daily usage slows down a computer’s performance. When the computer slows down it affects your ability to get work done. At this point it’s time to do what is necessary to make your computer faster and run like new again. There are several steps that should be taken to increase the speed of a Windows computer.

The first step to make your computer faster is to review the programs that start up automatically. This can be done by mouse clicking on the Start, choosing run, and typing msconfig at the command prompt. This will show the list of software programs that are loaded when you boot the computer. You can now remove any programs that don’t need to run. Removing unneeded programs will give Windows and your applications more RAM (random access memory) to use which will help to make your computer faster. Make sure to keep Windows system components enabled.

The next step is to clean the disk. Uninstall programs you no longer need. Programs you don’t need may be running and consuming valuable RAM. Defragment the boot disk by running a good disk defragger program. A good disk defragmentation program should defrag your disks and also your Windows registry. The registry is defragged by removing gaps and wasted entries. This keeps the registry as compact as possible. Optimizing the layout of files on the boot disk minimizes your computer start-up (boot) time and application load time. This is a big help when you want to make your computer faster.

If your computer system is running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 and has 1GB or less of memory (RAM), increasing the memory to 2GB will make your computer faster. If you are using the 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7, you should increase your memory to a minimum of 4GB. Refer to your system or motherboard documentation to determine the right type of memory to install.

The next step to making your computer faster is to clean the registry. You should do a clean Windows registry procedure once every six months to remove items no longer in use. For computers with many applications or where drivers are frequently being installed and uninstalled, registry cleaning should be done every three months. A good registry cleaner will scan your computer, back up the current registry and then safely clean the errors and invalid entries that cause your system to be slow, freeze and crash. Cleaning up Windows registry problems will make your computer faster and fun to use again.

How to Use Quotes from Cool Runnings at Work

Posted on 12 May 2010 by nick

The heart wrenching story of the Jamaican bobsled team and their hilarious struggle to make it to the Olympics is as inspirational as it is unbelievable. Sure, sure I know it is based on a “true story”, but let’s face it – real life is never that funny and a guy like John Candy could never give athletic advice of any kind to anyone. Junior, Josef, Derice, Yul and of course Sanka captivate audiences with their laid back swagger, determination and over-the-top antics. Whether you need a jolt of motivation or a shut-them-down one-liner, quotes from Cool Runnings will be sure to deliver. Start practicing your Jamaican accent and purchase some Jamiacan-flag inspired business-casual and await your opportunity to use one of these gems:

Situation: One of your male co-workers makes a sexist remark to a female in the office

Sexual harassment and Corporate America go hand-in-hand. I don’t even know why we have HR departments anymore. If their job is to uphold our rights and keep us happy – they are doing a pretty sub-par job. The next time you see a female get sexually harassed, or you yourself are being sexually harassed mutter something under your breath and when you are asked to repeat your statement simply reply:

“What I am saying to you, is that you are the kind of club-toting, raw-meat-eating, Me-Tarzan-You-Jane-ing, big, bald bubblehead that can only count to ten if he’s barefoot or wearing sandals.”

Situation: The AC in your office is on full blast and you are starting to lose feeling in your toes

The office temperature is always uncomfortable – you freeze in the summer and basically train for an African safari during the winter. Next time you have your space heater on full blast and a blanket wrapped around your shoulders and John from finance jokingly asks “Cold huh?”, reply:

“Cold? I’m freezing my royal Rastafarian nay-nays off!”

Situation: You get worked dumped on you by the bitter, balding senior executive who rather enjoy an evening with his mistress than fulfilling his work obligations

This has happened to everyone. You are leisurely packing up your stuff to leave on a beautiful Tuesday and Bob comes over and asks you to do work that he should have been doing instead of twittering with his 20-something mistress. Give him your best stink eye, point to his receding hairline (or completely bald head if you are lucky) and offer up an alternative:

“How ’bout I draw a line down the middle of your head so it looks like a butt?”

Situation: The supremely hopeless intern asks you for a letter of recommendation

The only useful thing this intern did for you all summer was boost your ego about what a Corporate superstar you are and now he is asking for a letter of recommendation. You literally have nothing nice to say and have been up all night trying to finish a presentation. Being caught in a whirlwind of honesty-is-the-best-policy behavior you retort:

“You’re going nowhere, , and you’re thrilled to death about it.”

When your HR rep asks if said intern is ready for an offer at your company say:

“Ready? That boy’s never ready! He’s a lazy, sorry, no-good bag of bones.”

Situation: Your subordinate is nervous about her first solo presentation and needs a pep talk.

Nervous Nancy needs a little pep talk so you pull her into the restroom, face her in front of the mirror and ask her what she sees. As soon as her voice cracks in response to your ridiculous question let out a booming war cry and say:

“Well, let me tell you what I see. I see pride! I see power! I see a bad-ass mother who don’t take no crap off of nobody!”

Situation: A meeting is about to end and you feel a warming sense of loyalty towards your team

You are caught up in the moment and want to inspire a little Corporate fight song action. Since none of these exist (to my knowledge) you decide to borrow from the Jamaican bobsled team and shout:

“Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, its bobsled time! COOL RUNNINGS!”

Situation: You are brutally hungover

For this retort you’ll need a partner. Suppose you and your cube-neighbor Becca went out boozing the night before to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. As you guys both struggle to get it together, glare at your computer screen and muster up the best Jamaican accent you can and ask:

“[Insert co-workers name]… you dead?”

To which she should reply

“Ya, mon”

How To Use Quotes From Legally Blonde At Work

Posted on 28 April 2010 by nick

Few people can pull off naïve as adorably as Elle Woods does in Legally Blonde. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in Corporate America (besides seo marketing), it is that it’s incredibly important to feign naivety and initially bill yourself as an underachiever. OK, I know it sounds contrary to everything you’ve been taught to believe, but trust me on this one folks. After all, the key to corporate success is laziness.

The goal is to create low expectations for yourself in the workplace. This makes people more apt to: 1. Tell you secrets (how much they make, who favors who, etc.) because they think you’re a harmless moron, 2. Not trust you with hard work, making your job painfully easy, and 3. Be shocked and awed whenever you do something right, creating more publicity for yourself than a monotone, consistently-hard-working co-worker. It’s a trusted tactic that’s worked flawlessly over the years. Unfortunately, not all of us are skilled at hiding our intelligence. Thus, I present you, Elle Woods.

Situation: You are introduced to the company in a Monday morning meeting and asked to say a few words about yourself.
Response: Hi. I’m Elle Woods and this is Bruiser Woods. We’re both Gemini vegetarians.

Situation: Your boss gives you your first solo task and asks you if you can handle it.
Response: I once had to judge a tighty-whitey contest for Lambda Kappa Pi. Trust me, I can handle anything.

Situation: During your first lunch with co-workers, they start a semi-intellectual conversation about a murder in the news headlines and ask you for your opinion on the trial.
Response: I just don’t think that Brooke could’ve done this. Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.

Situation: One of your department peers tries to put you in your place by giving you a backhanded compliment on your outfit.
Response: Oh, I like your outfit too, except when I dress up as a frigid bitch, I try not to look so constipated.

Situation: You’ve been cornered and have no choice but to take part in the ritualistic department-bonding where you all hate on your boss.
Response: She could use some mascara and some serious highlights, but she’s not completely unfortunate looking.

Situation: The quarterly meeting on employee morale is taking place and you have to give your suggestion on how to improve the office climate.
Response: It has come to my attention that the maintenance staff is switching our toilet paper from Charmin… to generic. All those opposed to chafing, please say “Aye”.

Situation: Your boss pulls you aside to ask you why thought leaving work on time to attend your roommate’s happy hour was more important than staying at work late to meet a deadline.
Response: I promised her, and I can’t break the bonds of sisterhood.

Situation: HR tells you that your work attire is inappropriate.
Response: No more boring suits or pantyhose, I’m trying to be somebody I’m not.

Situation: You happen to offer a surprisingly intelligent insight on Marketing’s ad campaign for hair care products and they ask how you came up with it.
Response: The rules of hair care are simple and finite. Any Cosmo girl would have known.

Situation: IT asks you to show them what you did right before your computer stopped working.
Response: Bend… and snap!
