The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

So perhaps you have heard of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch, perhaps you have not. It is something I have been more recently educated on, and in doing so felt it important to share my new found knowledge.

So what is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Eastern Garbage Patch or Pacific Trash Vortex? It is a gyre of litter (trash) in the central North Pacific Ocean. Still not following? In layman’s terms, it is a big pile of trash floating in the middle of our ocean. A very big pile of trash. Big in the sense that it is twice the size of Texas. It contains over 100 million tons in floating garbage and growing.

454 Tattoo Outside

It often seems that there are two types of tattoo parlors. There are the parlors where you walk in, point at a generic tattoo on the wall, hand them your money and walk away with ink. In San Diego, shops like these typically line the streets of PB and OB. Then there are the parlors that seem to function first and foremost as art studios. The main difference between the two, aside from cost, is that in the first type you are more or less the artist. In the second, you are a canvas.

454 in Encinitas is exemplary of the second type of parlor. After an underwhelming first tattoo experience at the first type of shop I mentioned, I was ready to get a real tattoo done by a real artist. After researching and asking for recommendations, I headed up to 454 for a consultation with Billy Barnett. The studio, located right on the North Coast Highway by Moonlight Beach, is spotless. Clean and beautiful, the shop has two buildings: the front, with a large comfortable porch adjacent to it, is

where the majority of the piercings take place and has a back room with a tattoo chair. A sidewalk outside leads you to the back studio which is where you get your first taste of Billy’s work: the beautiful ocean mural on the external wall was designed and painted by him a few years ago.

I met with Billy and described what I was looking for: an original piece based on some outlines and few photographs; I wanted to give him full control and interpretation of the design. Even though he was booked a month out (as is the case with a few of the artists here – always a good sign), he managed to fit me into a cancellation spot that weekend. When I returned to the studio for my appointment, he had drawn a beautiful piece for me. We made a couple of adjustments in size and I tried on the stencil and was in love. He made sure to have me look at the stencil from every angle to ensure that I was satisfied with its placement and after he mixed the colors he had me approve those as well. He was very patient and kind throughout the whole process. The tattoo itself took an hour and a half.

In reading other reviews about 454, I noticed reviewers who said that the shop had an unfriendly atmosphere. I can see how some people would think that. While I was getting my tattoo done several people came in to consult with Billy about tattoos. What I interpreted as straightforward, honest answers (see the “Yes They Hurt” sign hanging above the front door), given quickly to accommodate them but not expounded on since he was working, could have sounded rude to some. Don’t let those bad reviews deter you. Meet with the artists at 454 yourself and when you do keep in mind that in the end they are sending their art out into the world on your body. Like any other artist, musician or writer, they’re not going to do something they’re not proud of and willing to own up to. You should come to a parlor like this with an open mind and a desire to have a piece of original art done on your body; if that’s not the experience you’re looking for, this definitely is not the place for you. This was as perfect a tattoo experience, from consultation to finished product, as I could have asked for. I highly recommend 454 and Billy Barnett to anyone looking to get inked in San Diego county.
