The Bubble Dragons Bub and Bob are the stars of the Nintendo classic Bubble Bobble and the latest entries in our list of Iconic 8-Bitters. Bubble Bobble is a wonderfully simple game where the Bubble Dragons, Bub and Bob, traverse 100 levels collecting items, disposing of enemies by throwing bubbles at them, and pushing other bubble to do the dirty work for them.
“The player can also blow bubbles. These can trap enemies, who are defeated if the bubble is then burst by the player’s spiny back. The bubbles also float for a time before bursting, and can be jumped on, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible areas,” explains Wikipedia.
Bubble Bobble is somewhat of a cult classic that grew to unpredictable popularity which resulted in a variety of sequels and spin-offs. The true stars of the game are Bub and Bob which are described by the game’s box art as “these are two hungry dino-mights and they’ve got bubble fightin’ fun down tight.” I’m not exactly sure what that’s supposed to mean, if anything, but I can roll with it. Bubble Bobble is an amazingly addictive game also.
Bubble Bobble has music & sound effects that you loved and your mother hated. You and your best friend would be joyously fighting, floating, and popping your way to level 100 while your mother would be angrily shouting to turn that music down. Play the video below and you’ll realize what I’m talking about. The Bubble Dragons Bub and Bob are two of the most Iconic 8-Bitters of all time. In fact, writing this has inspired me to play some Bubble Bobble!
