Army of 2: The 40th Day Review

Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem are back! Army of 2: The 40th Day was one of the most anticipated games for 2010 for TheDailyContributor.com (Mass Effect 2 being our most anticipated). The original Army of 2 introduced the video game world to two amazing characters and a very unique game play due to its Aggro system.  Anybody who used to blow into their Contra cartridge for the original Nintendo Entertainment System will love the Army of 2 franchise.

Army of 2: The 40th Day allows the player to play his game. What I mean by that is if you are more a stealthy, silent assassin type, who likes to set things up with careful strategy and planning, you can play Army of 2: The 40th Day with that tactic. Alternatively, if you are the type who likes to kick in doors, throw grenades with reckless abandon, shoot anything that moves, light everything up with epic firepower and ask questions later, you can play Army of 2: The 40th Day with that tactic as well:

Notable Game Play Elements:

1) Making Ethical Decisions

Army of 2: The 40th Day offers a variety of new elements that make this an amazing game experience. First of all, EA Montreal takes a page (albeit a very small page) out of Bioware’s book and forces users to make moral, ethical decisions throughout the game that have a direct outcome on your missions. These decisions are surprisingly hard because there is no clear cut answer - if you decide to save that poor little, helpless girl - it might come back to haunt you.

2) Ad-Hoc Camera Views

This new feature took me about an hour of game play to adjust to. However, once mastered, the ability to shift the camera view around is unbelievable. While playing Army of 2: The 40th Day, your character is either slightly off to the left, or slightly off to the right - contrary to almost all other 3rd person shooters (think of Gears of War game play where you’re directly in the center). Think about it, a lot of times all the action will be off to the right…or of to the left…so you can shift the camera to focus on an area. This also helps you sneak around corners and setup your attack plan. There is nothing lost when the action is directly in front of you.

3) Taking Enemies Hostage

As hinted at before, if you chose to play Army of 2: The 40th Day as a secret assassin you’ll love the fact that you can take enemies hostage. It gets better - you can then force other enemies around to surrender, or use that poor hired goon as a bullet proof vest. However, just because you have an enemy hostage, doesn’t mean the other enemies in the room wont decide to still open fire.  You can also chose to tie the enemy up to boost morale. Or, you can tie him up and stomp him out. What will your decision be when you have your enemies back but they have guns pointed at hostages heads?

4) Ability to Surrender / Mock Surrender

The AI in Army of 2: The 40th Day are smart. They might jump you and give you the option to surrender. Of course you can mock surrender to set up many things. First, you can mock surrender to draw your enemies out - you can ever drop to your knees and drop your fire arm while your ally flanks. Or, you can mock surrender and pull out your pistol and duel at point-blank range. Really cool feature.
